Maggie was sitting in the library when she heard the crunch of horse hooves on the drive pass the house and head toward the stables. She flew to the window, her heart hammering madly in her chest, hoping she’d see the familiar figure of her husband. Just as she was running to the door, Bruce popped his head in the library and announced that, indeed, Carter was home. Bruce smiled at the brilliantly happy face that greeted his news. Maggie flew to the front door, pausing just two seconds to catch her image in the hallway mirror. Patting her curls ineffectually, she heaved open the door and began running to the stables to make good on her promise to greet her husband by flinging herself in his arms. She had missed him more than she thought possible and her heart felt as if it would explode with love at the thought of seeing him again, holding him again.
